A few summers I took a vacation week with hubby and kiddos to join my parents, brother, sister in law and their 3 kids in Manitowish Waters for a fabulous week in the Northwoods.
There is always a story to be told when vacationing with teenagers and I am happy to say they didn’t disappoint
One of the highlights for the kids was the wave runner we rented for them to bop around the lake on. As we said all week, “going really fast just never gets old” I couldn’t agree more!
I snapped this picture as the girls were about to head out one of the afternoons
They were gone a long time
We started wondering if they had gone into an adjorning lake, stopped at the swimming beach…. and then they were gone still a little longer.
As we were down on the dock deciding if we should go look for them, a 30 year old guy, dreads down to his waist, pulled up and said, “hey, do you have 3 girls out on a wave runner?”
Every parent knows that at that moment your heart sinks, your palms get sweaty and you imagine every worst case scenario.
He continued, “they lost the key and are stranded in the other lake”
Deep breath.
How can you go from “oh my poor babies, I will kill for them” to “In the other lake? Lost the key? I will kill them” in the blink of an eye, right?
But we are a pretty calm family, so the dads and grampa hopped in the ski boat and went to rescue our darlings.
Now, I know you are thinking, great story Lisa, but what does this have to do with my direct sales business?
Hang with me…..
When the girls got back they shared the story that a speed boat had whipped past them way too close and the wave made them tip and they slid off the wave runner into the lake.
no big deal
They were laughing until they realized the key had slipped from the driver’s hand when she fell into the lake.
no key
now stranded
not so funny
They are smart girls and so they stood up on the wave runner and started flagging down passing boats.
3 boats full of what they described as “kind of like grammy and grampa” sped by with out offering to help these stranded girls.
so that is 3 boats of 60 year old, responsible adults who never even slowed down to check on 3 girls obviously in need of help
Who stopped?
That 30 year old guy with the dreads
who not only stopped, but drove into our lake to let us know and then drove back to the girls and hung out with them until we showed up.
Now I know that everyone of us says we are not prejudice.
But we are
If I had to place money on it, I would have bet the “gramma and grampa” would have been the first to stop. And I am going ot guess you would too. Even the girls did.
We make assumptions about people based on their clothing, grooming, job, what car they drive.
and we make these assumptions in our direct sales business all the time.
How many of us have tried to recruit the president of the bank or our doctor?
the head of HR in our office or our real estate agent?
We think they are too busy, too successful, why would direct sales appeal to them?
Here is what you need to know:
Rockstars are rockstars for a reason!
Successful people have skill sets, views of the world and a work ethic that translates to anything they would do.
Why wouldn’t we want these folks on our team?!
And here is how you are going to do it:
“Mary, given how successful you are in your career I am sure you get this all the time, but have you ever considered Direct Sales? With your experience/skills/organization you would be fabulous!”
No one can be offended by that right?
I would be flattered.
and remember that underneath the clothes, car, grooming and job title, people are people.
You don’t know what may be going on in his or her life.
Is she looking to stay home with the kids?
Is his company down sizing?
Are they looking to take early retirement but want to do a little something?
when we judge people and determine for them if Direct Sales is a good fit, we are being prejudice about what kind of person they are and what kind of person will be good at what we do.
So be open
Share the opportunity with everyone
If we really believe that direct sales is the key to flexibility and profitability, we want to share that with everyone, right!?
I bet you can put together a whole new list of potential recruits…..
